Biography:
Val was formerly the Director of the St Martin's College Lancaster Centre for the Development of Learning & Teaching (CDLT) a post which she held from February 2000 until her retirement on 31st August 2004. Her background is in Radiography and the Imaging Sciences where she developed considerable experience and expertise in the field of distance learning. She was awarded a Churchill Travelling Fellowship in the late 1980s and spent several months in the USA and Canada investigating distance-learning use in various Health Sciences courses.

Val wrote the original HENRE application to the EU and was therefore the founder member of the HENRE network. Val has been involved as HENRE project leader and was sub group 2 co-ordinator until March 2004. She is presently employed by the UK Society and College of Radiographers (SCOR) in the development and writing of professional policy documents.

Mel Dow:

Following Val's retirement, Mel Dow became project co-ordinator until October 2007. Mel authored the final report of HENRE I which received commendation from the EC in terms of good overall project management... 'based on good planning, organisation, monitoring, reporting and evaluation of strategies and procedures'.
Mel then went on to write the successful HENRE II bid without which the whole of the HENRE II project including factors such as Erasmus Mundus would not have come to fruition.
